RANGOLI DECORATIONS

Rangoli also known as Kolam is a folk art from India. Rangoli are decorative designs made on the floors of living rooms & courtyards during Hindu festivals. They are meant to be sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities. The ancient symbols have been passed on through the ages...from each generation to the next...thus keeping both the art form & the tradition alive.

The purpose of Rangoli is decoration...& it is thought to bring good luck. Design-depictions may also vary as they reflect traditions, folklore & practices that are unique to each area. It is traditionally done by women...but over the years modern additions have been adapted. Generally, this practice is showcased during occasions such as festivals, auspicious observances, celebrations of marriages & other similar milestones & gatherings.

Rangoli designs can be simple geometric shapes, deity impressions, flower & petal shapes (appropriate for the given celebrations)...but they can also become very elaborate designs crafted by numerous people.

The patterns are typically created with base materials usually with dry or wet granulated rice or dry flour, Sindoor (vermilion), Haldi (turmeric) & other natural colors can be added. Chemical colors are a modern variation. Other materials include colored sand & even flowers & petals, as in the case of Flower Rangolis.

Diwali (also spelled Devali in certain regions) or Deepavali, popularly known as the "festival of lights"...is a five day festival which starts on Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi)...celebrated on thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Ashwin & ends on Bhaubeej...celebrated on second lunar day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Kartik. In the Gregorian calendar...Diwali falls between mid-October & mid-November. Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore & Fiji.

For Hindus...Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year & is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BCE. Arya Samajists...celebrate this day as Death Anniversary of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. They also celebrate this day as Shardiya Nav-Shasyeshti.

The name "Diwali" or "Divali" is a contraction of "Deepavali"...which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night & one's house has to be cleaned...both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst because it is believed that it drives away evil spirits. During Diwali...all the celebrants wear new clothes, share sweets & snacks with family members & friends.

The festival starts with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year. The second day of the festival is called the Naraka Chaturdasi. Amavasya...the third day of Diwali marks the worship of Lakshmi...the goddess of wealth. The fourth day of Diwali is known as Kartika Shudda Padyami. The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj)...& on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.
